A passenger can appear more than once
Enplanements count boarding activity. A traveler taking multiple flights can contribute multiple entries, so the total cannot be interpreted as the number of Americans who flew during the month. It also does not measure the number of completed vacations.
The carrier scope matters as well: these are U.S. airline operations. That is different from all airlines operating at U.S. airports or the worldwide air travel market.

The unadjusted number describes reported traffic for the month. Seasonal adjustment accounts for recurring seasonal patterns to help comparisons across months. The adjusted value is not a second category of passengers to add to the unadjusted total.
Use like-for-like measures when comparing periods. Mixing an adjusted month with an unadjusted month introduces a change in method as well as a change in traffic.

Domestic and international passenger counts are components of the systemwide total. The international category concerns U.S. carrier operations, including the coverage described in BTS’s reporting notes. It should not be labeled the entire international airline market.
The displayed values are rounded to millions. Calculations using them can differ from calculations based on the underlying unrounded counts.
