A season total counts repeated attendance
A season-ticket holder can contribute attendance across many games. A family visiting once contributes a different pattern of attendance. Both appear in the league total, which cannot distinguish unique fans without additional data.
This distinction matters when comparing baseball attendance with a survey of how many adults follow the sport. One is an event-based administrative count and the other concerns people.

Team totals reflect an entire regular-season home schedule. They do not directly measure the crowd at an average game, stadium capacity, or the percentage of available seats occupied.

Television audiences, streaming viewers, radio listeners, and ballpark attendance describe different ways to follow baseball. They cannot be combined into a unique fan count by simple addition because people can appear in multiple measures.
Likewise, attendance is not revenue. Ticket prices, concessions, memberships, and other commercial arrangements affect revenue independently of the number reported as attending.

A fair season comparison uses the same league scope and distinguishes regular-season games from postseason games. Including playoff attendance in just one year would change the definition halfway through the comparison.
For a team-level trend, consult the full season records and note any changes in venue or schedule. A total gives a useful scale, while a causal explanation requires evidence beyond the attendance figure itself.
