Postsecondary enrollment increased by 476,522 students, or 2.5%, from fall 2022 to fall 2023 in the NCES release examined here. The increase covered both undergraduate and graduate education, with different growth rates across institution types. [1]

The increase was uneven across sectors
Four-year institutions had the largest absolute increase in undergraduate enrollment in the release. Two-year institutions also added students, but at a smaller percentage rate. Less-than-two-year institutions recorded a relatively small numerical increase alongside a larger percentage change.
Counts and percentages tell complementary stories. A modest percentage change in a large sector can represent more students than a much larger percentage change in a small sector. Both measures are worth keeping visible.
[1]A fall count is a snapshot
Fall enrollment describes students enrolled at a particular point in the academic cycle under IPEDS reporting rules. It differs from the number of distinct students served during an entire year.
Seasonal enrollment reports from another organization can have different coverage, timing, and definitions. A spring estimate and a fall estimate should not be presented as successive annual observations without checking what each one measures.

The release puts graduate enrollment at 3,213,887 in fall 2023, compared with 3,182,618 in fall 2022. These totals describe graduate education and should not be called undergraduate enrollment.
It also reports 4,982,428 students enrolled exclusively in distance education in fall 2023. Exclusively online is a narrower category than taking at least one online course. Mixing those two definitions can make online participation appear inconsistent across reports.

The page describes the fall 2023 results in the cited NCES release. Its publication or review date does not turn those observations into current-year enrollment. Keeping the reference period visible makes the historical comparison usable.
The release identifies these data as provisional and explains that institutions may later revise them. A later IPEDS data extract can therefore differ from the figures in this release. Comparisons should state which version was used.
