High school sports participation entries in 2025–26 [1]
The NFHS participation survey recorded 8,415,684 high school sports participation entries in 2025–26. That included 4,761,095 in boys’ sports and 3,654,589 in girls’ sports. The survey counts participation opportunities, so a student playing more than one sport can contribute more than once. [1]

Participation is not a count of distinct students
A student who joins different teams across seasons can appear in multiple sport counts. Adding the sports therefore measures participation entries, rather than the number of unique young people involved. This is a useful measure of the breadth of activity, provided the unit is clear.
It would be misleading to divide this total by national high school enrollment and call the result the percentage of students who play sports. The numerator would include repeat participants while the denominator would count students once.
[1]Comparing academic years
The table uses academic years rather than calendar years. Matching the period is important when comparing these figures with enrollment, spending, or other school statistics. A fall season and the following spring belong to the same academic-year report.
All five totals shown increase from the preceding displayed year. That pattern describes this interval; it should not be extended into a prediction that future totals must keep rising.

Separate totals make it possible to see how the overall count is composed. Differences in participation can reflect the sports offered, roster sizes, and other features of school programs. The table does not identify a single cause.
These aggregate figures do not measure access at an individual school. A national increase can coexist with a local program closing or a particular sport losing participants.

To understand a particular sport, consult its line in the full survey. National totals combine programs with very different team sizes and seasons. The overall count cannot identify the fastest-growing sport without those additional rows.
The survey is best read as an administrative picture of reported school sports participation. It does not include every informal game, community league, or physical activity involving teenagers.
